B Corp: good companies

“How do we tell the difference between a ‘good company’ and just good marketing?”

So you’re a company who says you want to do good, go green and make a positive impact on the world.  How do we, the consumers, know you’re telling the truth?  Well, if you are a certified B Corporation, through the non-profit B Lab, then we know your company is the real deal!

“B Corporations are a new kind of company that uses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.”  It’s kind of like LEED certification for companies.  Sort of.  B corporations are B certified companies who operate on an agreed level of excellence, by way of meeting absolute transparency standards on social and environmental performance; by legally expanding their corporate responsibilities to include consideration of stakeholder interests, and “by amplifying the voice of sustainable business and for-profit social enterprises through the power of the unifying B Corporation brand.”

That’s a whole lotta good.  Some of the 160 companies who are currently B certified are:  Seventh Generation (love their home cleaning products!), TS Designs (just posted about them!), Comet Skateboards, Dansko, Method, and Numi Organic Teas.
